KABULIWALLAH
"Kabuliwallah" is a story about a five-year-old girl named Mini, her father (the narrator), and their interaction with a Kabuliwallah named Rahamat.
Mini is a talkative and curious child, and her father enjoys
her lively nature. One day, Mini spots Rahamat, a Kabuliwallah, outside their
window. She's curious and calls out to him, but when he approaches, Mini gets
scared, thinking his large bags contain children.
Despite her initial fear, Mini later befriends Rahamat and
chats with him daily. The narrator gives Rahamat some money for the treats he's
been giving Mini, which Mini's mother doesn't approve of. However, the narrator
enjoys hearing Rahamat's stories about Afghanistan and travel.
Mini's mother is concerned about Rahamat's presence, fearing
he might harm their daughter. Still, the narrator dismisses these worries.
Rahamat plans to return to Afghanistan and continues
visiting Mini until one day, he is arrested after a fight with a customer who
refused to pay. Mini innocently asks if he's going to his "śvaśur-bāṛi"
(in-law's house), and Rahamat confirms this. Mini soon forgets Rahamat and
finds other friends.
Years later, as Mini's wedding approaches, Rahamat is
released from jail and visits their home. At first, the narrator is uneasy due
to Rahamat's criminal past. However, Rahamat reveals that he brought gifts for
Mini, showing a handprint of his daughter, Parvati, on a piece of paper. This
gesture touches the narrator's heart, and he calls Mini down to meet Rahamat.
Mini, now dressed as a bride, acts shy and distant, which
saddens her father. Rahamat also realizes that his own daughter will have grown
